Salute to America Celebrations

On Saturday, July 4th, the Salute to America will take place on the National Mall in Washington, DC to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America. This historic event is being made possible through collaboration between the District of Columbia and federal law enforcement agencies.

Event attendees are advised to review the following security information to ensure everyone can enjoy the festivities.

Weather, Security, & Prohibited Items

Local officials and event staff will closely monitor the weather. If severe weather occurs, changes to the schedule will be announced to the public. If there is an evacuation, please follow the direction of law enforcement.

Anyone who attends events on the West Front of the US Capitol must go through security screening before entering the event area. This includes a security screening and an administrative search of all bags and containers.

The following items are prohibited: 

  • Aerosols
  • Ammunition
  • Animals other than service/guide animals
  • Backpacks and bags exceeding size restrictions
  • Balloons
  • Bicycles
  • Coolers
  • Drones and other unmanned aircraft systems
  • Explosives
  • Firearms
  • Flammable liquids
  • Glass, thermal, or metal containers
  • Laser pointers
  • Mace and pepper spray
  • Packages
  • Range finders
  • Recreational motoried mobility devices
  • Selfie sticks
  • Signs larger than 20'X3'X1/4"
  • Structures
  • Support for signs and placards
  • Toy guns
  • Weapons of any kind
  • Any other items determined to be a potential safety hazard at the discretion of law enforcement

Surrendered items will not be returned.

No Drone Zone

The Salute to America is a No Drone Zone. It is illegal to operate a drone or any other type of unmanned aerial vehicle near this event and over the National Mall. Violators will be prosecuted and penalties are severe, including fines upwards of $100,000, criminal charges, incarceration, and the confiscation of drones or other equipment.
