Getting Around - DC250

Getting Around During Major Events
Closures, access and travel updates across the city.

As Washington, DC hosts 250 events throughout the year, residents, commuters, visitors, and businesses may experience road closures, increased traffic and changes to normal operations.

Detailed information will be shared on this site in advance of each event as plans are finalized.

For Residents in Event Areas
Residents in event areas may experience temporary changes to access, parking and neighborhood traffic patterns.

You may see:

  • Temporary road closures or restricted access points
  • Parking limitations or changes to normal availability
  • Increased pedestrian activity and event-related traffic
  • Plan ahead and allow additional time for local travel during major events.
  • As we get closer to major events, we will post updates here.

Getting Around the City
Travel patterns will shift during major events, particularly around the National Mall and major corridors.

To plan ahead:

  • Check road closure updates before traveling
  • Use public transportation when possible
  • Allow extra time for trips, especially during peak hours
  • Metro and bus service may experience higher demand or adjusted service during large events.

For Businesses and Major Employers
Businesses and institutions should plan for increased activity and operational variability.

Consider:

  • Adjusting staffing, hours and scheduling
  • Planning for delivery timing and access constraints
  • Communicating with employees about travel expectations
  • Delivery vehicles and service providers may be affected by closures—plan alternative routes or timing where possible.
  • Working with your BID, Main Streets organization or internal operations teams can help ensure coordination.

Road Closures and Access
Street closures and traffic adjustments will be implemented for major events and will be shared in advance through official District channels, including this site.
